What Is Standardized Testing?

Description
This brief PowerPoint presentation shares key points about standardized testing. Standardized tests are defined, and the alternate term of large-scale assessment is introduced. The presentation points out some limits of standardized tests that are due to their reliance on easy-to-score and easy-to-administer kinds of items, such as multiple-choice and short answer. It describes two major types of standardized tests: achievement tests (designed to measure students specific knowledge and skills); and aptitude tests (designed to predict how well students are likely to perform in another setting-like college). It explains the two major ways of scoring tests: norm-referenced scoring (scoring is based on comparing a student’s score to that of other students), and criterion-referenced scoring (scoring is based on how well the student has mastered the content of the test). Additionally, it depicts the controversy surrounding standardized testing and the common misuse of standardized test scores to measure the educational effectiveness of schools.
